Íris Oliveira de Sousa

Caminhar à Portuguesa

Creative Process:

My inspiration for these three models of PAEZ is Portuguese culture, namely the traditional clothing, accessories, and religious events and cults. These designs have a purpose beyond aesthetics, as they're meant to make people remember how important is our cultural legacy.

The first design has a white background and on top of it a traditional clothed couple, one figure in each shoe, sided by traditional motifs representing Viana´s embroidery. I felt inspired by this optimistic view of a sunny and happy Portugal, and I tried to replicate it in each design.

The second pair of PAEZ is inspired by the Celebrations of Saint Anthony (Santo António), something that every single person in Lisbon misses dearly. A part of this shoe is the classic blue background reminiscing of bright blue-sky days, the sardines characteristic of people eating out on the streets during the festivities in June, and for those who are more kin to details, a small printed representation of the Manjerico (one of the iconic symbols of the commemorations)

Finally, the last pair of PAEZ has a couple of pairs of swallows, also a very common bird in our country in a cartoonish-like version.
